Professor Dame Averil Mansfield

Professor Dame Averil Mansfield -  Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Imperial College

Dame Averil trained in Medicine at Liverpool University and went on to train as a surgeon in the same City and additionally spent two years training in the USA.

Dame Averil was appointed Consultant General Surgeon to two of Liverpool’s Teaching Hospitals and after 10 years she moved to London and from then on she specialized in Vascular Surgery and associated research.

Dame Averil had several roles in The Royal College of Surgeons of England including becoming Vice President.

Women in Surgical Training was developed by her and continues as Women in Surgery to this day with a large membership. She was President of The Association of Surgeons of GB and Ireland, and of The Vascular Surgical Society.

At Imperial College she was appointed Professor of Surgery.

Dame Averil has held a number of leadership roles in retirement and spends much of her leisure time playing music, either at the piano or on the cello.

After being a castaway on Desert Island Discs it was suggested that she wrote her memoir and this has been published by Penguin Ebury
