Professor Aneel Bhangu

Aneel Bhangu is Professor of Surgery at the University of Birmingham and Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham. He combines active clinical practice with a career as a surgeon-scientist and international research leader, focusing on improving surgical systems and patient outcomes in the NHS and globally. Since 2017 he has directed a £32 million portfolio for UK government funders, leading strategy, horizon scanning and delivery of large research and implementation programmes. Working across governments, funders, industry and academia, he holds three Director-level research roles, including Director of the NIHR Global Surgery Research Unit. He has published more than 350 peer-reviewed papers and led the COVIDSurg Collaborative, an international research effort during the pandemic that informed surgical policy worldwide. He is the author of a leadership book on high-performance research teams, Editor-in-Chief of the Impact Journals group, and a recipient of the Trainer of the Year award from the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.
