ASIT x Mammary Fold Introduction to Breast Surgery

An immersive simulated experience as “A day in the life of an Oncoplastic Breast surgeon” from diagnosis, assessment, decision making and surgical management of patients with breast cancer. 

Trainees will understand the diagnosis, complete skill stations in breast biopsy, attend a simulated MDT and then continue with the surgical decision making of reconstructive surgery and undertake simulated skill training in breast conserving surgery.

Programme: 

09:00 - 10:00 - Lecture - 1. Introduction to breast surgery training. 2. Day in the life of Breast Surgeon. 3. Triple assessment – how we assess and diagnosis breast cancer.  A powerpoint lecture to the whole group to discuss the assessment process in breast cancer.

10:00 - 11:00 - Skills Station - FNA, Core biopsy, Punch biopsy with US - 3 groups - show and practice on simulated models

11:00 - 11:30 - BREAK

11:30 - 12:15 - Simulated MDT - Mock Oncoplastic MDT – run through of 3-5 cases (9 mins each) of discussing patients and deciding on surgical management.

12:15 - 13.00 - Lecture - Breast reconstruction. Discussion of IBR Vs autologous flap reconstruction with example photo models.

13:00 - 14:00 - LUNCH

14:00 - 14:45 - Practical afternoon - 15 min slide presentation: sentinel lymph node biopsy breast and skin. 15min for each participant (30mins total) 

14:45 - 15.30 - Practical afternoon - 15 min slide presentation: fibroadenoma excision. 30 mins for 1 participant.

15.30 - 16.15 -  Practical afternoon - 15 min slide presentation: Wire-guided wide local excision. 30 mins for 1 participant.

16.15 - 17.00 - Discussion - Research in Breast Surgery - PhD / MD / Current projects. Q&A
